Sunlight is made up of wavelengths of photons, some visible and some invisible to the human eye, including infrared radiation. This is why a black object feels hotter than a lighter one on a bright, sunny day.
Light colors, by contrast, absorb fewer wavelengths from the sun’s rays. White reflects most of the visible spectrum and doesn’t get nearly as hot, which is why a white T-shirt is far more comfortable to wear on a hot day.
Using Science to Cool a Roof

During daylight hours, sunlight hits the roof surface. Most of that energy reflects back up into the sky, but some of it gets absorbed and transferred into the surface itself, raising its temperature. That absorbed heat then works its way into the building, adding to the ambient temperature inside and forcing your cooling system to work harder.
This is where cool roof science comes in. The roof is coated with a highly reflective material, or in some cases, an entirely new roofing system is installed. These materials are engineered for both high solar reflectance and high thermal emittance: reflectance determines how much sunlight bounces off the surface rather than being absorbed, while thermal emittance determines how efficiently the roof releases whatever heat it does absorb, rather than holding onto it and radiating it into the building. Together, these two radiative properties are what the industry uses to define and measure a cool roof.
With more sunlight reflected and less heat absorbed, the building underneath stays cooler. Instead of the equivalent of a black T-shirt on your roof, you now have a white one.

Modified bitumen sheet membranes are similar to built-up roofs but are typically layered with rubber or plastic, then finished with mineral granules or a smooth coating applied during manufacturing.
Spray polyurethane foam roofs are created by mixing two liquid chemicals that react and cure into a single continuous layer bonded to the roof deck. A protective, reflective coating over the foam is what makes this type of roof cool.
Steep-Sloped Roofs
Steep-sloped roofs rely on shingles and tiles. Manufacturers produce shingles from reflective materials, such as specially formulated asphalt or wood, and roofing contractors can apply additional coatings to boost solar reflectance further.
Concrete, clay, and slate tiles are also common on cool roof systems. Clay and slate offer naturally strong solar reflective properties, and a manufacturer-applied coating can push their performance even higher.
Low and Steep-Sloped Roofs
Metal shows up on both roof types. Unpainted metal reflects sunlight well but tends to absorb too much heat on its own to qualify as a cool roof. Such roofing systems rely on reflective coatings to give them the thermal emittance they need to meet cool roof requirements.
